Push-Pull Cable Systems: How They Work & Uses
A push-pull cable system transmits mechanical force in both directions through a flexible inner cable sliding inside a protective conduit. Pushing or pulling one end moves the other, letting operators control a mechanism remotely or around tight bends where a solid rod won't fit used in automotive, industrial, marine and aerospace equipment.

How a push-pull cable works
A push-pull cable is an inner steel wire (or rod) that slides inside an outer conduit. Because the inner is rigid enough to transmit a push as well as a pull, one control can both advance and retract a mechanism unlike a pull-only cable, which transmits force in one direction and relies on a spring to return. The flexible conduit lets the cable follow bends and route around obstacles where a solid linkage couldn't fit. Correct length, routing and end-fittings are what give smooth, backlash-free travel.
Key benefits of push-pull cable systems
Versatility and flexibility. Cables can be routed around obstacles, bent to fit tight spaces and operated at angles, so one solution suits many layouts.
Remote operation. Force is transmitted over distance, allowing control where direct mechanical links are impractical or the operator needs to be away from the mechanism.
Precise, two-way force transmission. Because the cable both pushes and pulls, it gives accurate, repeatable actuation with minimal lost motion.
Durability and reliability. Quality cables and conduits resist corrosion, abrasion and temperature swings, cutting downtime and maintenance in demanding environments.
Where push-pull cables are used
Automotive & transport: Throttle controls, gear-shift and car-shifter cables, park-brake and auxiliary controls in cars, trucks and buses.
Industrial machinery: Conveyors, agricultural and material-handling equipment, and plant where force must be transmitted precisely from a remote control point.
Marine & aerospace: Throttle and steering controls on boats, and flight-control, landing-gear and engine linkages where reliable remote actuation is critical.
Specialised equipment: Valve actuation, access controls and custom machine functions see our remote valve control cables.
How TGA Cables builds push-pull cables
TGA Cables manufactures push-pull cable assemblies to order in Bristow, Utility and Low-Friction constructions, in metric or imperial sizes, with your exact length, routing and end-fittings. As the sole Victorian distributor of CableCraft Motion Controls, we match existing, hard-to-source and discontinued cables just send the old cable or a photo.

Push-Pull Cable FAQs
A push-pull cable is a flexible control cable with an inner wire sliding inside an outer conduit that transmits force in both directions it can both push and pull a mechanism, so one cable advances and retracts it.
A push-pull cable transmits force in both directions (push and pull). A pull-only cable transmits force in one direction and relies on a spring or gravity to return, so it’s simpler but can’t push a load back.
