A gear shift cable is a control cable running between the gear shifter and the gearbox or selector mechanism. When you move the lever, the inner cable slides inside its outer conduit and transmits that motion to the transmission to select a gear smoothly and around the bends of the vehicle’s layout, where a solid rod couldn’t fit. The same principle applies to manual gearboxes, automatic selector cables and industrial transmission controls.
